The UIMS may be provided as middleware for the effective management and interchange of Unstructured information over a wide array of information sources. The architecture generally includes a search engine, data storage, analysis engines containing pipelined document annotators and various adapters.
The searching technique makes use of a two-level searching technique. Also disclosed is system, method and computer program product to process document data. The method includes inputting a document and operating at least one text analysis engine that comprises a plurality of coupled annotators for tokenizing document data for identifying and annotating a particular type of semantic content. Operating the at least one text analysis engine generates a plurality of views of a document, where each of the plurality of views are derived from a different tokenization of the document. The method further includes storing the plurality of views in a common data structure associated with the document.
Semantic Search refers to a document search paradigm that allows users to search based not just on the keywords contained in the documents, but also on the semantics associated with the text by analysis engines. UIMA applications perform analysis on text documents and generate semantics in the form of annotations on regions of text. For example, a UIMA analysis engine may discover the text ‘First Financial Bank’ to refer to an organization and annotated it as such.
With traditional keyword search, the query first will return all documents that contain that word. First is a frequent and ambiguous term ‘ it occurs a lot and can mean different things in different places. If the user is looking for organizations that contain that word first in their names, s/he will likely have to sift through lots of documents containing the word ‘first’ used in different ways. Semantic Search exploits the results of analysis to allow more precise queries. For example, the semantic search query <organization> first </organization> will rank first documents that contain the word ‘first’ as part of the name of an organization. The UIMA SDK documentation demonstrates how UIMA applications can be built using semantic search. It provides details about the XML Fragment Query language. This is the particular query language used by the semantic search engine that comes with the SDK.
The original TAKMI breakthrough was doing something not previously possible before TAKMI ‘ by humans .. or any other means. To me, this is real innovation.
The ability to derive insight from large volumes of Unstructured information has come along way since 1997 when the TAKMI project started. As an example, the use of content analysis in the eDiscovery process alone is a major breakthrough. Doing a large eDiscovery project today without analytics is inconceivable to many. The thought of social media analysis without the ability to analyze the content is also inconceivable. TAKMI came at a time when none of these things existed. I think we’re trying to compare apples and oranges.
Various new applications can be built by combining together existing resources in different ways. This process can be helped greatly by ensuring that individual resources are interoperable, i.e., that they can be combined together with little or no configuration. The UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Architecture) framework is concerned specifically with ensuring the interoperability of resources, and the U-Compare platform , built on top of UIMA, is designed especially to facilitate the rapid construction and evaluation of natural language- processing/text-mining applications using interoperable resources, without the need for any additional programming.
U-Compare comes together with a library of resources of several different types. As part of META-NET, this library will be extended to cover a number of different European languages. The functionality of U-Compare will also be enhanced to allow the use of multi-lingual and cross-lingual components, such as those that carry out automatic machine translation. By integrating and showcasing the functionality of U-Compare within META-SHARE, it is intended to demonstrate that META-SHARE can serve not only as a useful tool to locate language resources for a range of languages, but also act as an integrated environment that allows for rapid prototyping and testing of applications that make use of these resources.
UIMA enables applications to be decomposed into components, for example ‘language identification’ => ‘language specific segmentation’ => ‘sentence boundary detection’ => ‘entity detection (person/place names etc.)’. Each component implements interfaces defined by the framework and provides self-describing metadata via XML descriptor files. The framework manages these components and the data flow between them.

Initially it excited me because, as a BI Architect, I am always looking for data to put into a dynamically decided context and to transform into Information (data+context=Information). The basic idea of a UIMA is that all 0′s and all 1′s are data exisitng in a context (this is my definition). These 0′s and 1′s can be in the context of an email, a Word doc, a cookie, or even a directory name.
